1 Minute to Read -

STEM education is now a key feature of your child’s primary education but what is it all about?

This short Q&A puts STEM in a nutshell for you.

What does STEM mean?

STEM is an acronym which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

How is STEM taught in schools?

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are taught in a combined manner rather than as separate subjects.

The overall aim is to empower pupils to see how those topics are linked and how those links apply in real life.

For example, architects use Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths to design complex structures.

At what age does STEM education begin?

STEM educations begins when your child starts primary school and continues throughout their secondary education. They can also choose to follow the STEM route in further and higher education.

How can I get my child interested in STEM?

The great thing is,  STEM thrives on curiosity and we all know that children are born curious.

So, you can foster an interest in STEM way before your child starts school.

For example, you can get them to create their own structures using blocks and as your child gets older,  more complex projects can be undertaken.

The main thing to remember is that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are around us and in use all the time.

What Career opportunities does a STEM education offer?

Of course, It’s never too early to start thinking of possible careers your child could pursue.

Most modern jobs now include the use of STEM.

They include virologists, architects, design engineers, sound effect specialists and computer scientists. The list is endless!

Unfortunately, girls are under-represented in many STEM careers.

Parents are advised to support all their children’s interest in discovering the wonderful world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
